ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister (PM) Shahid Khaqan Abbasi claimed on Thursday that the general elections would take place within 60 days, and not 90 days, after the establishment of the caretaker government.
PM Abbasi spoke to reporters after a dinner hosted by Speaker Ayaz Sadiq in honour of the National Assembly members, and said that the incumbent government would complete its term and the next general elections would be held on time.
The Prime minister stated, “I have discussed the appointment of the caretaker prime minister with the opposition leader, and it is hoped that we will agree on one name.”
Earlier that day, PM Abbasi also condemned the police for torturing journalists outside Parliament on Press Freedom Day.
Speaking about former PM Nawaz Sharif, Abbasi said, “Nawaz Sharif was here yesterday, he is here today and will continue to be in the future.”
The caretaker government will take power for after the PML-N Government will end its five-year tenure on May 31. General elections are expected to be held in the last week of July or the first week of August.
According to the Constitution of Pakistan, the incumbent PM will appoint the caretaker prime minister on the advice of the opposition leader in the National Assembly.
The caretaker government will be responsible for holding transparent elections.
