Three more infants succumbed to malnutrition in Tharparkar on Sunday, Sindh Health Department said.
According to the health department, three infants succumbed to malnutrition at Civil Hospital Mithi.
The death of the children has raised the toll to 50 for the current month and 476 for the current year in Tharparkar.
According to reports, every year almost 1,500 children die of malnutrition, infections and lack of proper medical facilities in the neglected region.
As per the United Nation Children Fund’s report released in April 22, infants die before turning one month old.
Pakistan is among countries with the highest infant mortality rates. Among these countries, eight are in Africa and two in Asia, including Afghanistan, which is ranked third.
“Pakistan is the riskiest place to be born as measured by its newborn mortality rate,” the report stated.
“A baby born in Pakistan is almost 50 times more likely to die during his or her first month than a baby born in Japan, Iceland and Singapore.”
