ISLAMABAD: The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) will meet on Monday morning – September 12 – to discuss Panama leaks that poses a serious threat to Sharif’s dynasty in Pakistan.
National Assembly Opposition Leader Syed Khurshid Shah said the PAC will also grill the heads of Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP) and National Accountability Bureau (NAB) for not accelerating the pace of investigation into Panama revelations that created a storm on the country’s political horizon.
The PAC meeting has been convened on the demand of PTI member Arif Alvi who had submitted a letter to PAC secretariat that pleaded the heads of investigation departments to be summoned for their inputs regarding the offshore companies.
Alvi – in his letter – said that the corrupt plundered the national exchequer and deposited it in offshore accounts. It is the people’s right to know how much of their wealth had been stashed away there, he added.
PAC Chairman Khurshid Shah directed chairmen NAB and FBR to brief the committee about the law that empowered the corrupt. According to Panama leaks, more than 600 Pakistanis owned offshore companies in foreign countries where they had concealed their ill-gotten wealth for tax evading.
FBR Chairman Nisar Ahmen Khan – who had already under scathing criticism from PTI – has issued notices to 600 Pakistani whose offshore companies have come to surface. PAC secretariat also confirmed that summons have been issued to chairmen NAB, FBR and SECP for appearing before in the committee to answer the questions raised by the parliamentarians.
PTI Chairman Imran Khan launched an agitation movement against Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s government and alleged him of using delaying tactics to secure his own skin from Panama papers investigation. Imran also accused Nawaz of not constituting an investigation commission under Supreme Court’s judges.
Names of Hassan Nawaz, Hussain Nawaz and Maryam Nawaz’s offshore companies are also included in the leaks and owing to these companies, Nawaz Sharif’s government is beset by perils amid political storms which intensified by each passing day.
